Self-Control is the Spirit of a King
Every man wants respect, success, and peace—but few realize all three come from one thing: self-control. The Bible calls it “ruling your own spirit” (Proverbs 16:32). The world calls it discipline. God calls it the mark of a king. It’s the fruit of the Spirit called temperance (Galatians 5:22-23)—the divine ability to master your impulses when your emotions are screaming for chaos.
1. The Slave Within: A Man Without Rule is a Man Without Royalty
He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls. — Proverbs 25:28.
A man without self-control is defenseless. Your enemies—lust, anger, ego—don’t need to attack you from the outside. They’ve already camped inside your gates. You can have a family, a job, a car—but if lust, anger, or ego control you, you’re still a boy in a man’s body. Every temptation is a test of your kingship.
2. Every Loss is a Sermon on A Missed Warning
A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished. — Proverbs 22:3.
You lost opportunities because you overreacted.
You lost money because you chased instant pleasure.
You lost respect because you couldn’t shut your mouth. Lack of self-control isn’t a personality flaw—it’s a spiritual breach. Your lack of restraint opened the door.
3. Emotional Control: Where Kings are Separated from Clowns
He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that rules his spirit than he that taketh a city. — Proverbs 16:32.
Power isn’t loud—it’s calm. It’s a man who can stare chaos in the face and not flinch because “the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds” (Philippians 4:7). Jesus was mocked, spit on, and falsely accused—and He said nothing (Isaiah 53:7). That is power.
4. Lust: The Enemy Wearing Desire’s Mask
Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace,… — 2 Timothy 2:22.
Lust is weakness disguised as desire. Solomon, the wisest man on earth, was brought down by lust (1 Kings 11:1-4). A man who cannot control his urges becomes magnetic—not because he plays games, but because he carries the weight of self-respect.
5. Time is the Sceptre: Guard it Like a King
Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. — Ephesians 5:16.
The biggest reason men fail is distraction. They scroll, they gossip, they procrastinate—all in the name of “rest.” But Scripture says “in all labour there is profit” (Proverbs 14:23). Your time is your kingdom—guard it like one.
6. The Tongue is a Throne: Guard Your Words, Guard Your Honour
Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles. — Proverbs 21:23.
A wise man doesn’t say everything he knows. He listens twice, speaks once, and lets results do the talking. The tongue can be a fire; control it, and you control the direction of your life.
7. Master Your Hunger or be Devoured by It
I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection. — 1 Corinthians 9:27.
Control your hunger for sex, validation, revenge, or attention. Joseph ran from Potiphar’s wife (Genesis 39). He didn’t debate. He fled. That’s mastery.
Final Message of Hope:
Samson had strength but no self-control—and lost his eyes, his life, and his divine destiny (Judges 16). A man with self-control is not easily eaten. He is the lion who is already full.
