Patronage, The Modern Man, And Service to God: The Divine Blueprint of Humanity
From the very foundations of creation, God established a predetermined and sovereign plan for mankind. Humanity was never created accidentally, neither was man designed to wander aimlessly through existence. The Scriptures reveal that before man drew breath, God had already ordained purpose, responsibility, worship, and dominion.
The book of Genesis presents man not merely as a living being, but as the custodian of divine assignment. “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion…’” (Genesis 1:26). This declaration established humanity as both representative and steward of God on earth. Man was created to live under divine patronage — fully dependent upon God while simultaneously serving His eternal purpose.
However, the modern world has significantly altered man’s perception of service to God. Contemporary society glorifies self-sufficiency, material acquisition, intellectual pride, and moral independence. In the process, many have unconsciously dethroned God from the center of human existence. The modern man seeks success without surrender, influence without holiness, and prosperity without obedience.
For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud… lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God, 2 Timothy 3:2-4.
This prophetic description mirrors the present generation. The modern man often measures success by accumulation rather than obedience. Spiritual devotion has been replaced by public validation, and divine calling sacrificed upon the altar of worldly ambition.
The Crisis of Modern Patronage
Patronage, in the theological understanding, refers to dependence upon and allegiance to a superior authority. Biblically, man was designed to exist under the patronage of God. The Garden of Eden itself symbolized divine provision, protection, fellowship, and governance. Adam lacked nothing because heaven remained his source.
Yet after the fall of man in Genesis 3, humanity began seeking alternative systems of patronage. Instead of depending upon God, man turned toward wealth, political systems, social status, technology, and self-glorification. Modern civilization has intensified this rebellion. Today, many men worship achievement more than God, careers more than calling, and pleasure more than righteousness.
The Apostle Paul warned of such an age when he wrote:

God’s Overhead Plan for Humanity
Despite human rebellion, God’s original intention for mankind remains unchanged. Heaven still seeks men and women who will serve faithfully under divine authority. Jeremiah 29:11 declares: “For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” God’s predetermined plan was never limited to earthly survival. It encompasses spiritual communion, moral transformation, stewardship, and eternal fellowship. Man was created to reflect the character of God within society.
This divine plan is further revealed through Jesus Christ, who restored humanity’s broken relationship with God. Christ demonstrated that true greatness is found in service. Though He possessed divine authority, He humbled Himself in obedience to the Father.
But made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a servant… He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, Philippians 2:7-8.
The theology of Christ challenges modern arrogance. In a culture obsessed with dominance and recognition, Jesus modeled surrender, humility, sacrifice, and complete dependence upon God.
